Position Overview

The Modeling team, located in Kennesaw, is seeking a Computational Modeling Co-op. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing physics-based and data-driven models enabling the research and development of aluminum alloys, guiding process improvements and optimizing product design. In addition, they will aid in upgrading existing Novelis models by extending them to other applications or accelerating them to speed up design iterations. This position will help take the modeling efforts within Novelis R&D to the next level, enabling aluminum alloy, process and product design. Must be available May 2026 to December 2026.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop finite-element models accounting for material microstructure and properties with product/process information
  • Develop python scripts to parametrize and automate model creation geared towards intelligent experimentation/design optimization
  • Leverage experimental and simulation data to build data-driven models aimed at accelerated prediction
  • Collaborate with other R&D teams to enable model-driven design guidance
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to share knowledge and findings across R&D

 

Minimum qualifications

  • Student pursuing B.S., M.S., or PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years into program if in B.S.
  • 2+ Years of experience with Python

 

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with mechanical engineering software (e.g. FEM such as Abaqus/LS Dyna/AutoForm, Solidworks, etc.)
  • Machine learning and data science experience.
  • Experience with tools leveraging GPUs for accelerated computing.
  • Experience with advanced AI methods – GANs, VAEs, Reinforcement Learning, RNNs, etc.
  • Experience or knowledge of metals industry or sheet metal applications
  • Experience with leadership and interpersonal roles
