Mechanical Engineering Intern

Position Overview:

Novelis in Berea, KY has an opportunity to participate in our on-site summer 2026 internship. The team is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern that can join the team for approximately 12 weeks. The person in this role will have the opportunity to participate in relevant work and gain hands on industry experience. The intern will report to the Engineering Leader and will gain experience with project management, CAD designing, and the implementation of various tools and pieces of equipment with a focus on the work management process.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop improvement for general engineering processes
  • Use CAD to design various tools/equipment and see through to implementation, if possible
  • Work with outside contractors to scope/spec new, improved equipment for plant operations
  • Work with cross-functional teams (Process, Operations, EHS, etc.) to develop new protocols pertaining to safety initiatives

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in an accredited 4-year University.
  • Must be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or recent Graduate.
  • Interested in gaining hands-on industry experience prior to graduation.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills which are essential for interacting with all levels of the organization
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer students majoring in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Reliability, Electrical, or Applied Engineering or a related field
  • Solid business insight
  • High interest in becoming an Engineer in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills

Location Profile

Novelis’ Berea facility is located in Berea Kentucky near Lexington. With 150 employees the recycling facility processes approximately 20 percent of all aluminum cans recycled in the United States each year – more than 750 million pounds. Berea is best known for its art festivals historic restaurants and buildings and as the home to Berea College and nearby Eastern Kentucky University. The Kentucky Artisan Center hosts a wide variety of works by Kentucky artisans.
