Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Central Services team, located in Bay Minette, is seeking a Power Distribution Electrical Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, commissioning support, operation, maintenance, and reliability of electrical power distribution systems, including 34.5kV and below in addition to providing Electrical support for the Plantwide Utility Systems. You will play a key role in supporting safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations by implementing robust preventive and predictive maintenance practices.

 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for future design and specify power distribution systems (switchgear, transformers, MCCs, breakers, protective relays) for 34.5kV, 13.8kV, 480V, and 120V systems.
  • Maintain one-line diagrams, cable schedules, load studies, and grounding/bonding strategies.
  • Support future capital projects and electrical infrastructure expansions, including power studies (load flow, short circuit, arc flash).
  • Monitor power system performance; identify and address voltage imbalance, load harmonics, and energy losses.
  • Work with plant leadership to ensure electrical systems meet production and uptime requirements.
  • Support energy efficiency initiatives and power factor correction projects
  • Support electrical operational needs for Central Services Utility Systems – Compressed Air, Cooling / Deionized Water Systems, Wastewater Treatment and Chemical Addition Systems in addition to other Balance of Plant Equipment.
  • Lead in the development and manage preventive and predictive maintenance programs for electrical equipment, including infrared thermography, insulation resistance testing, breaker testing, and relay calibration.
  • Support root cause failure analysis (RCFA) for electrical failures.
  • Collaborate with maintenance planners to ensure accurate scheduling, documentation, and completion of work orders (SAP/CMMS preferred).
  • Ensure spare parts strategy for critical power system components.
  • Ensure systems meet or exceed applicable codes and standards (NEC, NESC, NFPA 70E, IEEE).
  • Provide electrical safety training and enforce LOTO procedures and arc flash protection standards.
  • Participate in electrical incident investigations and corrective action implementation.

 

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of experience in power distribution engineering within a heavy industrial, metals, mining, or utility setting.
  • Strong working knowledge of medium-voltage (34.5kV and 13.8kV) and low-voltage systems.
  • Proficient with ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower, and electrical drafting tools such as AutoCAD.
  • Experience with protective relays, switchgear, MCCs, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Familiarity with maintenance planning tools (e.g., SAP PM module or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of predictive maintenance techniques, including thermography, ultrasound, and motor circuit analysis.

 

Preferred qualifications

  • PE license
  • Prior experience in aluminum manufacturing or continuous process industries.
  • Strong understanding of arc flash hazard mitigation.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate simultaneously with operations, maintenance, and project teams.

Location Profile

Novelis' newly announced Bay Minette facility will be located 35 miles northeast of Mobile AL and 45 miles west of Pensacola FL and is expected to create approximately 1000 high-paying advanced careers in modern manufacturing. This highly advanced rolling and recycling facility will be the first of its kind. It will primarily serve our customers in the beverage can and automotive markets.
