Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Novelis Global Research and Technology Center in Kennesaw, Georgia is seeking a Laboratory Test Engineer. This position will be a part of the Surface Science Team and handling all aspects of tribology laboratory experimental capability, such as developing, operating and maintaining test equipment, solving equipment issues, design and implementation of next generation capabilities to improve existing setup. In addition, the incumbent will work closely with Tribology and Surface scientists to conduct complete tribology research work that would include experimental work, data interpretation and post analysis of the samples through various tribological and surface characterization techniques. The role will also include working with experts in providing business critical solutions to improve surface quality of customer and Novelis products.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct non-routine tribological and surface testing for research programs, and complete design of experiments with high quality and minimal guidance
  • Collaborate with experts on tribological understanding of products & related processes, and provide critical insights and technical recommendations
  • Apply the working knowledge and in-depth understanding of tribology and surface engineering for the data analysis and contribute to the technical feasibility analysis for projects
  • Perform SEM analysis on a wide variety of material using Secondary and Back Scattered Electron imaging and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy and Wavelength dispersive spectroscopy.
  • STEM Imaging and EDXS analysis of electropolished thin foils FIB lift outs, and microtome samples.
  • Work closely with other lab personnel to complete the tasks for tribological testing, surface characterization, mechanical and metallurgical testing and develop specific properties of flat rolled aluminum products
  • Use lab management software to prepare and complete specific task requests for various tribology and surface science work packages
  • Present the test & characterization work results and findings with specific recommendations during project team meetings
  • Design and implement new capabilities within the existing tribology testing lab

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical, Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering. Other engineering or science degrees with work experience in tribology will be considered
  • At least 3 years of experience in R&D or manufacturing environment with hands-on tribological testing and in-depth understanding of friction, wear, and the function of lubricants
  • Experience and working knowledge in tribology of metals, metallurgical and surface characterization techniques such as metallography, XPS, XRD etc.
  • Hands-on experience working in Electron Microscopy and with an emphasis on material science.
  • Basic knowledge in the following techniques is required:
    • Secondary and Backscattered Electron Imaging,
    • Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDXS),
    • Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD)
    • Confocal microscopy
  • Excellent academic achievement and working knowledge of statistics, methods and Design of Experiments
  • Desire to take initiative and develop proactive relationships
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize responsibility; must be able to manage multiple tasks without compromising the quality of work and data
  • An interest in critical thinking, problem solving and attention to details; strong communication and presentation skills for reporting to internal partners

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with python programming language
  • Experience in 2D/3D designs using various engineering and design software and tools
  • Experience with electron microscopy of Aluminum systems
