Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsible for handling the disposition of coils that go on hold for both process and surface

anomalies. Work closely with the Operators in determining the outcomes of all coils that are

subject to the Hold conditions. Ensure that all coils are dispositioned in a timely manner and

input results and reasons for issues into Novelis systems. Assist in problem solving quality

issues on shift.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Communicate regularly with Operations regarding customer concerns/complaints

Initiate root cause analysis/investigation for coils with significant recovery losses including WUL’s.

Disposition coils, following provided criteria and reactions. This will include review process data, SIS maps, and operator notes, consult with Operations/Process team as necessary.

Help to develop the Surface Inspection System metal conditions library.

Monitor SIS for coils from previous shifts and work to:

a. refine the metal conditions

b. place coils on hold if necessary based on SIS.

c. train operations on new conditions and items to watch for.

 

Aid in the root causes for scrap and major sources of waste on the line.

 

Disposition non-conforming product based on metallurgical, chemical, or surface properties of the product.

 

Assist if required in documenting any mechanical or chemical testing failures in manufacturing process and give recommendations for further testing. Process Engineers take the lead and escalates when necessary to Process Engineering leader.

 

Advise on Quality Alerts for sustained quality issues on the manufacturing lines.

 

Input information on individual coils in Customer complaint issues. Assist with Customer complaint issues.

 

Assist in LPA implementation as required.

 

Work on various projects assigned by the Process Engineering Leader.

 

Quality Technicians will be trained in the lab and used as fill in support as needed on weekday shift.

 

Be flexible to new projects and challenges as the role is developed.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

Document surface conditions from Manufacturing Operations and aid in analyzing their root causes.

Facilitate corrective actions within the manufacturing operation and validate effectiveness.

Provide feedback to Operators on the quality rejections of manufactured product.

Ability to use appropriate software to gather and report data on manufacturing performance.

Ability to use continuous improvement techniques for problem solving.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:

 

Knowledge of manufacturing operations required. Particular emphasis on sheet surface-shape inspection and metal processing

Ability to use computers and learn new programs. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products is required. This position will also require heavy training in SIS & other software.

The quality specialist will get basic statistical training.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Collaborate with the relevant personnel to investigate/remediate instances of quality excursions.

 

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

 

A desire to constantly grow and develop personally and professionally.

 

Education, Experience & Training:

 

Bachelor or Associate degree desired, but experience in automotive/aluminum sheet manufacturing environment will be given priority

Computer literate.

Basic Statistical training required.

Willing to travel occasionally.

Location Profile

Novelis’ Guthrie facility is located in Guthrie Kentucky approximately 30 minutes from the Tennessee state line near Clarksville Tennessee and Hopkinsville Kentucky. As Novelis’ newest facility Guthrie will house a heat treatment and pretreatment line that will serve the North American automotive market and employ 125 residents. In addition to hunting fishing and hiking residents enjoy the Guthrie Transportation Museum which is the hub of the city’s renewal efforts.
