Responsibilities & Qualifications

Position Overview: 

The Novelis Legal team is seeking an Assistant General Counsel, Litigation. The person in this role will report to the Head of Legal, Litigation, Labor & Employment.  The successful candidate with have a combination of significant litigation experience, law firm experience and/or in-house business experience to help avoid, strategically assess, manage and communicate regarding disputes involving Novelis.  Whether in litigation, arbitration, administrative or alternative dispute resolution proceedings, this role will require an ability to manage a wide array of matters in areas such as commercial contracts, environmental, employment, labor, workers’ compensation, insurance coverage, torts, tax, ERISA, intellectual property and other complex matters. This role is client facing and will require developing strong relationships across a large, multinational organization. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Support implementation of the Litigation-Labor-Employment Center of Excellence and assist in development of policies, SOPs, and metrics
  • Provide substantive and practical legal advice, counseling and support to senior executives, management and others related to Novelis Inc. and its worldwide subsidiaries in areas including litigation and alternative dispute resolution to assist meeting Novelis’ objectives. 
  • Represent Novelis in all stages of civil litigation, compliance, and regulatory matters, including from pre-trial activities through appellate practice as necessary. 
  • Oversee cases assigned to outside counsel, including attending court hearings, settlement conferences, mediations, and arbitrations. 
  • Provide strategic corporate guidance, litigation prevention and avoidance, investigation work, client counseling, the full range of litigation and trial work, managing outside counsel, and backfilling other commercial law and corporate governance support needs as resources or other circumstances dictate. 
  • Provide employment and labor compliance advice and manage employment litigation and quasi-litigation matters.
  • Prepare and file discovery requests and responses. 
  • Defend and conduct depositions. 
  • Day-to-day monitoring of open litigation matters. 
  • Collaborate with outside counsel regarding litigation strategy and case value. 
  • Prepare case evaluations and other reports relating to open matters in litigation. 
  • Investigate pre-claim matters by conducting employee interviews and reviewing relevant records. 
  • Investigate allegations contained within filed disputes. 
  • Evaluate exposure and recommend reserves relating to open matters in litigation. 
  • Negotiate settlements and prepare settlement agreements. 
  • Prepare reports for internal use regarding litigation trends and recommendations regarding the same. 
  • Provide training across the company and employees on litigation and risk management matters. 
  • Formulate and drive strategy in partnership with internal business partners.  
  • Assign matters to outside counsel and oversee all stages of dispute resolution  
  • Manage preparation of responses to discovery requests and subpoenas.  
  • Prepare case evaluations and other reports relating to open matters in litigation. 
  • Investigate pre-claim matters by conducting interviews and reviewing relevant records. 
  • Evaluate exposure and recommend reserves. 
  • Advise the Head of Legal, Litigation, Labor & Employment on litigation strategy and potential outcomes. 
  • Negotiate and prepare agreements, including settlement agreements and commercial contracts. 
  • Prepare reports for internal use regarding litigation trends and recommendations regarding the same. 
  • Analyze and implement how to deliver dispute resolution services more efficiently and/or cost effectively. 
  • Provide training across litigation, employment, and risk management matters. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Juris Doctor and active bar license in good standing in at least one state (preferably active Georgia bar license) 
  • 7-10 years of combined experience at a top-tier law firm (multinational law firm experience is a plus) and/or corporate law department.
  • Experience with a wide range of litigation and pre-litigation matters.
  • Excellent communication, writing, analytical, organization, and negotiation skills are essential. 
  • Teamwork oriented attitude and ability to work well with and relate to company personnel at all levels. 
  • Excellent legal and business judgment and ability to multi-task. 
  • Must be proactive and can work independently. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a love of continuous learning and ongoing process improvement. 
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in time-sensitive situations with a keen attention to detail. 
  • Must be a self-starter, highly motivated, and able to shift directions quickly when priorities change. 
  • Enthusiastic, responsible, and able to handle confidential information with professionalism and diplomacy
