Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Novelis Corporate Legal team is seeking a Senior Commercial Counsel.  The person in this role will report to the Head of Legal, Capital Expansions and Commercial Contracts, and support the new global Commercial Center of Excellence.  The ideal candidate will be responsible for legal matters arising from Novelis’s material global commercial relationships within its various businesses, with a focus on key customer relationships of Novelis’s Aerospace Value Stream.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Commercial Center of Excellence (COE) and Commercial Contract Processes. The Senior Commercial Counsel will be responsible for supporting the new global Commercial COE, including with commercial contract documentation and leading and supporting internal and external legal negotiation of complex commercial contract terms.  The Senior Commercial Counsel will be part of the global Commercial COE and assist in designing and continuously improving Novelis’s global commercial contracting processes.
  • Legal Advice and Counseling. As part of the global Commercial COE, the Senior Commercial Counsel will provide strategic and practical legal advice, guidance and counseling to internal clients globally at all levels on a variety of complex commercial transactions and arrangements, and cross functional support in multiple areas utilizing diverse legal skills, to ensure that legal needs and business interests and objectives are protected while mitigating risk.
  • Commercial Contract Negotiation. As part of the global Commercial COE, the Senior Commercial Counsel will build, manage and maintain client relationships with Novelis’s global sales teams, working with them, as a subject matter expert, to plan, structure, analyze, negotiate, review, draft, implement and complete strategic commercial arrangements.
  • Commercial Dispute Resolution. The Senior Commercial Counsel will work with internal clients to analyze and resolve commercial disputes with Novelis’s customers, including implementing general risk management and litigation avoidance strategies.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Graduate law degree (from an accredited law school) from one of the countries in which Novelis is doing business, and in good standing.
  • Minimum five to seven years work experience as a practicing commercial contracts lawyer
  • Written and verbal English fluency.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to use independent judgment and creativity to resolve complex commercial contract issues
  • Significant experience and strong background in commercial contract negotiation, drafting, analysis, and dispute resolution, and experience in counseling global organizations on complex commercial issues.
  • Detail-oriented and ability to work accurately under pressure and manage multiple transactions and projects simultaneously under deadline pressure in a high-performance environment.
  • Ability to follow up on assignments in a timely manner and exercise good business judgment.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, strong leadership skills, the ability to create and sustain lasting relationships with the commercial organization and customers and build consensus across a global matrix organization.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, independently identify issues, analyze problems, and provide viable solutions.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels of personnel and management, including senior executives. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • 10 years plus experience as a practicing commercial contracts lawyer
  • Previous experience in manufacturing industries, particularly in the aerospace or aluminum sector, or supporting global sales teams.
  • Familiarity with legal practices in EU, North America, South America, and/or Asia.
  • Fluent in other language(s), in addition to English
