Responsibilities & Qualifications

Position Overview:

The Novelis Kennesaw team is seeking a Metallurgical Engineer – Joining & Forming Team. The person in this role will report to the Lead Engineer in the Joining & Formability Team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing customer-focused, sheet aluminum expertise and will have a general understanding of aluminum sheet and its use in can, auto, aerospace, and specialties markets. Knowledge of other alloys and products is considered an asset. This position requires execution within a team environment for on-time in-full delivery as well as an entrepreneurial spirit to explore new processes and technologies. Familiarity with heat treatment practices, microstructure characterization, mechanical property assessment, rolling processes, and chemical composition are desired. This position will work closely with a team of Global R&D Engineers and Scientists to solve problems across all Novelis value streams (can, auto, aerospace, and specialties) and develop a deeper core process-property linkage with responsibility for conducting key programs of laboratory work with a scope and complexity determined by knowledge and experience.

 

The ideal candidate should be comfortable working across different teams and use the expertise of the wider R&D community in the completion of projects and work packages. The work will be specialized, aimed at solving technical operating problems, improving processes, and developing new and improved products. Opportunities exist for learning and development, to manage projects, to collaborate with external customers and partners, to develop new intellectual property, to travel to Global Novelis sites, and to disseminate findings in peer-reviewed journals, at conferences, and internal reports. Applicants will have demonstrated experience delivering on-time results in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Balance priorities across multiple projects or work streams to meet assigned project commitments, timelines and objectives
  • Plan, organize, complete and document results of experiments, plant trials and product performance investigations conducted for Novelis, customers, and suppliers; responsible for reliability and accuracy of data and preliminary analysis of results
  • May work individually or as a part of a team to perform routine and non-routine tasks, and may coordinate the efforts of others to achieve common goals
  • Propose, justify and lead projects for a site or segments of larger projects
  • Assist with feasibility studies to analyze the commercial and technical viability of new products and processes
  • Assist with developing tests and testing regimes to demonstrate products are fit for purpose
  • Ability to independently isolate a problem and draw upon knowledge and experience to design an appropriate, well-controlled experiment to identify cause and possible solutions
  • Drive process improvements within a department or a location; may be responsible for maintenance of critical equipment or process
  • Demonstrates an understanding of key issues important to the business
  • Must be a strong teammate with ability to interact with different levels of the organization
  • Work with project teams to define work packages and submission of task requests to laboratories, including data input into our laboratory information management system, sample preparation, data analysis and interpretation, and summarizing and reporting of results
  • Perform regular update meetings with key collaborators highlighting accomplishments, risks, and where additional resources are required
  • Abide by Novelis’ Safety Absolutes, Cultural Beliefs, and Quality Management System

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials/Metallurgical Engineering with 1 – 2 years’ relevant experience
  • Experience working as a metallurgical engineer in a research and development setting would be an advantage, particularly if focused on aluminum alloys and products, and including the use of techniques for metals processing, mechanical and formability testing and microstructure characterization
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to conduct testing programs, to collect, document and analyze the results, and to make recommendations based on the findings with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency with computers and applications to collect, store, and analyze data and images
  • Knowledge of aluminum alloy systems and how these systems are applied to various use scenarios, such as inner versus outer in auto applications or can body versus can end in beverage can applications is considered an asset
  • Ability to contribute to the knowledge base of Novelis R&D by documenting work and preparing technical reports to share findings and knowledge to Novelis teams within R&D and to broader Novelis networks.
