Position Overview

Novelis is the world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, producing an estimated 19 percent of the world's flat-rolled aluminum products. We work alongside our customers to provide innovative solutions to the aerospace, beverage can, automotive and high-end specialty markets.

 

Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, Novelis has approximately 11,600 employees in 33 operating facilities on four continents and is investing $2.5 billion to build a new low-carbon recycling and rolling plant in Bay Minette, Alabama. The highly sophisticated facility will serve growing demand for aluminum beverage can sheet in North America. The new facility will also serve the automotive market, where aluminum is the fastest growing material as automakers make plans to achieve their sustainability goals. It will aim to be net carbon neutral for Scope 1 and 2, be powered primarily by renewable energy, use recycled water and be a zero-waste facility.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Novelis Bay Minette is seeking a FAME intern for our Bay Minette, AL facility. The successful candidate must be fully committed to engage in safe working practices, driven to learn new processes and procedures, and can work as part of a team to achieve safety, quality, and performance goals.

 

The student will participate with a local community college in an established Advanced Manufacturing curriculum. A successful candidate will build on the following characteristics during this internship: Punctuality, multi-tasking, taking constructive feedback well, strong interpersonal skills, strong writing skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with team members at all levels.

 

Program Overview:

 

The FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) AMT (Advanced Manufacturing Technician) program is an innovative and hands-on educational experience that bridges the gap between academia and industry. This program is designed to equip students with valuable skills, knowledge, and experience to become highly skilled, sought-after technicians in the manufacturing sector. As a FAME AMT student, you will engage in a comprehensive work-study program that combines classroom learning with on-the-job training, preparing you for a rewarding career in the modern manufacturing industry.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Participate in a structured work-study program that includes attending classes at a local community college and working at a sponsoring manufacturing company.
  • Attend classes at the community college for a minimum of two days a week, focusing on technical manufacturing skills such as electricity, robotics, fluid power, mechanics, fabrication, and industrial troubleshooting.
  • Work at the sponsoring manufacturing company for at least 24 hours a week (three days) as part of the paid on-the-job training component.
  • Actively engage in hands-on training sessions and practical exercises provided by the FAME program to develop a well-rounded technical skill set.
  • Collaborate with industry professionals, instructors, and peers to enhance your understanding of manufacturing processes, core competencies, and professional behaviors.
  • Embrace a disciplined and focused approach to your education and training, adhering to the rigorous standards set by the FAME program.
  • Maintain a proactive attitude towards continuous learning, seeking to improve technical abilities and problem-solving skills.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines both in the classroom and on the manufacturing floor to ensure a secure learning environment.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and effective communication skills while interacting with instructors, fellow students, and industry mentors.
  • Embody the values and principles of the FAME program, including dedication, commitment, and a strong work ethic.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • College-ready, according to local college qualifications
  • Minimum age of 18 upon entering the first semester.
  • Passion for pursuing a career in the manufacturing industry.
  • Willingness to commit to a rigorous and comprehensive two-year program.
  • Strong interest in technical skills development and hands-on learning.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Adherence to safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Ability to balance classroom learning and on-the-job training effectively.

Location Profile

Novelis' newly announced Bay Minette facility will be located 35 miles northeast of Mobile AL and 45 miles west of Pensacola FL and is expected to create approximately 1000 high-paying advanced careers in modern manufacturing. This highly advanced rolling and recycling facility will be the first of its kind. It will primarily serve our customers in the beverage can and automotive markets.
