Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Automation Technician has responsibilities of maintaining and improving process control and process data management equipment. Exists to provide high quality support to Guthrie Maintenance and Operations teams in the realms of reliability, productivity, and recovery. Technicians report to the Maintenance Leader and receive performance direction from Engineering.

 

Normal Work Schedule

Technicians might work a variety of schedules over time. Technicians on-shift will work on 4-day, 10-hour shifts per week on daytime. Depending on coverage for absences, breakdowns, outages, or special projects, overtime will be required. Technicians might be required to troubleshoot over the phone when off-shit.

 

Responsibilities

Maintains computer software and hardware and all facets of automation controls. Makes hardware and software upgrades to Programmable Logic Controllers, Micro Controllers and Process Computer Systems. Maintains a high technical aptitude of automated systems hardware and software. Functions as the “on-shift” technical leader for process automation systems. Provides on-shift automation support and training to team members. Interfaces with and under the direction of Engineering. Working in conjunction with operations and other maintenance employees, assist in troubleshooting systems, coordinating project work, and maintaining equipment functionality.

 

Qualifications

Candidates for this position must have demonstrated that they:

• Completed High School or GED. Associates Degree in a technical field preferred

• Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in advanced electrical systems maintenance and process computer operation/maintenance, preferably in the metal fabrication industry. Knowledge of computer architecture is highly desirable.

• Knowledge of machine center performance coupled with strong Process Automations aptitude is required in this position.

• Able to interpret drawings and schematics.

• Have a working knowledge of basic hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

• Have a working knowledge of combustion control systems – preferred.

• Have good working knowledge of PLCs and ladder logic.

• Network troubleshooting with TC/IP, Profibus, etc.

• Knowledge of Siemens TIA Portal, S7, and WinCC (Professional & Advanced) preferred. Knowledge of Allen Bradley Control Logix, Factory talk view is desirable.

• Experience with VFDs, knowledge of Siemens S120 and G120 preferred.

• Must develop, monitor, and maintain all Automation systems in the Unit.

• Must think independently in the realm of systems troubleshooting and maintenance.

• Problem solving and troubleshooting cost center functional, performance, and reliability issues within the Automated Systems.

• Team interface and requirements within systems issues requires the ability to adapt to change.

• Can analyze production problems and work to devise and implement solutions and improvements.

• Able to troubleshoot and repair low voltage circuits and equipment along with AC and DC motor drives.

• Able to use volt/ohm/milliamp meter and disconnect/reconnect components up to 480V.

• Complete work in a safe, timely, professional manner.

• Ability to work in a team environment toward accomplishment of objectives

• Ability to use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or other business system tools

• Have good written and verbal communication skills

 

Additional Considerations

Project experience is desirable, including development of Scopes of Work, creation of bid packages, tracking/reporting project status, coordination of planning and scheduling activities and verifying functionality.

 

Essential Physical, Sensory, and Mental Requirements

Will need to sit, stand, walk, and navigate stairways as needed daily. Will stoop, climb, kneel, and use ladders. Will lift up to and sometimes more than 50 lbs. Use computer & telephone daily. Working under a high level of time pressure is normal. Works on unleveled, unstable, and slippery surfaces. Good vision, hearing & speaking necessary. Must read, write, measure, draw conclusions, create methods, conduct research, develop plans, direct & evaluate others and do difficult math. Chemicals, vibration, extreme hot & cold, dirt, fumes and noise are typical daily surroundings.

Location Profile

Novelis’ Guthrie facility is located in Guthrie Kentucky approximately 30 minutes from the Tennessee state line near Clarksville Tennessee and Hopkinsville Kentucky. As Novelis’ newest facility Guthrie will house a heat treatment and pretreatment line that will serve the North American automotive market and employ 125 residents. In addition to hunting fishing and hiking residents enjoy the Guthrie Transportation Museum which is the hub of the city’s renewal efforts. The Guthrie team enjoys partnerships with Hopkinsville Community College Todd County High School Guthrie Fire Department and several local Rotary Clubs.
