Responsibilities & Qualifications

Novelis Richmond has an exciting opportunity for an experienced continuous improvement (CI) professional. Candidates must have demonstrated a strong CI background in a manufacturing setting. In addition, we need someone who can excel in a small plant environment where they can balance both strategy and execution. We are looking for someone who is comfortable spending time on the shopfloor and who isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves to get the job done!

 

This position is intended to take a leadership role in the development and execution of the Continuous Improvement journey for the Richmond facility. The Ops Excellence Leader will guide the team in the identification of CI projects, coordinate CI training, and lead the implementation of the Novelis Operating System (NOS). NOS is a framework designed to build operational excellence at a plant.

 

There are 12 practices within NOS:

  1. Define purpose & Strategy based on customer value.
  2. Set aspirations and targets.
  3. Identify losses and improvement opportunities.
  4. Align improvement efforts to a single agenda.
  5. Problem solve and manage execution of improvement initiatives.
  6. Standardize processes to ensure stability.
  7. Embed improvements in processes, roles, and tools.
  8. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized workspace.
  9. Adhere to execution of standards.
  10. Confirm adherence to standards/roles.
  11. Coach and inspire to develop and empower our people.
  12. Routine management to ensure performance against targets.

The Ops Excellence Leader will develop our NOS masterplan and coach the organization through the implementation of the 12 practices. They will work closely with the plant manager and the regional NOS Coordinator in ensuring a sustainable implementation of CI through NOS

 

Responsibilities

 

Lead Novelis Operating System for the Plant

  • Work closely with Plant Manager to facilitate the master plan implementation.
  • Coordinate assessments within the plant to identify CI projects that will yield the greatest value to the organization.
  • Create and implement the NOS Roadmap for the plant (improvement teams, audits, communication, etc.).
  • Coordinate and support across all CI projects.
  • Learn the improvement methodologies and tools and deliver professional training/coaching to enable employees at all levels to engage and contribute to the ZERO loss mentality that NOS embodies.
  • Support local steering committees and reporting of metrics.
  • Provide area management with the tools to highlight problems and address them such as utilizing RCFA (Root Cause Failure Analysis) to minimize the impact and preventing the reoccurrence.
  • Construct and implement system audits which will indicate whether improvements made are sustained, and train area management to perpetuate.
  • Contribute to the definition of standards, norms, and best practices for manufacturing management and performance measurement, promote and set them up.

Lead the Team

  • Promote EHS Policy, implement the EHS Management System and ensure continual improvement of EHS performance in our day-to-day operations.
  • Promote safe working habits and attitudes and good housekeeping practices in the department to help minimize accidents and maintain good employee morale and health.
  • Manage the Continuous Improvement team, establishing their priorities and setting direction.
  • Play a key role in the local change management and the cultural transformation of the site.
  • Participate in NOS coordination events and share with counterparts in the NOS community/organization
  • Identify, integrate, and promote best practices at the site.
  • Lead the educational efforts for management and leadership staff of the Richmond facility concerning NOS.
  • Develop and deliver professional training applications as required to enable employees at all levels to engage and contribute in the continuous improvement process.
  • Coach project leaders of kaizen events to ensure NOS methodologies are employed.
  • Coach management teams at the Richmond facility to develop a zero loss culture throughout the plant, where continuous improvement is interwoven into the way we routinely manage our business as opposed to being a specific program

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Continuous Improvement and/or Operational leadership.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field.
  • Black Belt Six Sigma Certified.
  • Leader of functional groups related to manufacturing and projects.
  • High degree of soft skills and high levels of personal credibility are essential.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills; ability to communicate with all levels in the organization.
  • Creativity and project management skills.
  • Desire to take initiative and develop a proactive relationships and fostering a collaborative workforce.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload; must be able to manage multiple tasks at once without sacrificing attention to detail.
  • Must be flexible and able to operate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Solid computer skills with software applications proficiency, including Microsoft Office. Ability to learn new software programs quickly.
  • Must be willing and able to travel (customers, training, vendors, other Novelis Facilities) as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience leading CI efforts and the teams.
  • Experience implementing operating systems or production systems.

Location Profile

Established in 1959 the Richmond facility finishes aluminum coils for the building and construction industry. The site utilizes recycled material to produce sheet used in the manufacturing of gutters downspouts soffit fascia siding roofing panels window trim and pipe jacketing. Employing around 75 people Richmond is committed to supporting the local community through its ongoing volunteer initiatives promoting safety and education.
