Responsibilities & Qualifications

Position Overview:

The Novelis Kennesaw team is seeking a Technologist in Elemental Chemical Analysis lab. The person in this role will report to the Laboratory Leader. The ideal candidate will be responsible for operating XRD, XRF, ICP, FTIR and XPS. This position will bring its experience in handling different analytical experiments and handle them according to the Novelis safety guidelines.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates personal commitment to safety and good EHS awareness by following established safety rules and practices during all activities. Ensure all user and visitors are aligned with all Safety Absolutes and other EHS initiatives.
  • Hold accountability for maintaining the analytical equipment situated in the area of responsibility to ISO 17025 standards
  • Carry out routine, as well as complex elemental analysis task requests from project leaders through our LIMS system
  • Prepare samples for ICP, XRF, FTIR and XRD investigations using different sample prep techniques
  • Conduct investigations and XRF analysis on samples of aluminum alloys as well as other metal systems for purposes of metallurgical assessment.
  • Use ICP-MS for the analysis of trace metals and inorganic contents in liquid samples
  • Run qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements, coatings and lubricants using different spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR, NIR and GDOES.
  • Communicate the research findings to the project managers and collaborators on routine basis

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Entry to this level typically requires 3-5 years of progressive experience in analytical chemistry and Bachelors in chemistry, metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, material science, physics or equivalent.
  • Must be Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • The ability to acquire new knowledge, capability and skills in elemental composition analysis as well as XRF, ICP-OES, and spectroscopy techniques such as FTIR, NIR, and GDOES.
  • Hands on experience working with wet chemistry techniques with an emphasis on material science.
  • Desire and ability to collaborate and communicate across functions are critical to this position.
  • Knowledgeable about overall chemical safety
  • Experience with following the standard procedures i.e. ASTM, ISO etc.
  • Willing to collaborate with other Novelis R&D labs by undergoing training in other areas where resources are necessary for high priority testing

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of experience with master’s degree in analytical chemistry
  • Experience with Aluminum systems is advantageous
  • Working knowledge of XPS will be a plus
