Position Overview

Novelis is one of the world leaders in aluminum recycling and rolling and a leading sustainable aluminum solutions provider. Driven by our purpose of “shaping a sustainable world together” we work alongside our customers to provide innovative solutions to the aerospace automotive beverage packaging and specialty markets. Headquartered in Atlanta Georgia Novelis has approximately 13000 employees in 32 operating facilities on 4 continents.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Novelis Global Roadmap Lead team is seeking a Co-op student to join our R&D division. This role reports to the Battery Automotive Technology Principal Engineer and offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on lightweighting in automotive applications. The ideal candidate will focus on benchmarking the weights of various automotive subsystems, calculating mass influence coefficients, and analyzing the associated costs of resizing and re-engineering due to lightweighting.

In this role, you will develop insights into how weight reduction in key subsystems impacts overall vehicle performance and cost-effectiveness. This position plays a critical part in enabling Novelis to identify high-impact areas for lightweighting, supporting our mission to drive sustainability and innovation in electric and commercial vehicles.

Why Join Us?

  • Innovative Environment: Work at the intersection of vehicle lightweighting, cost analysis, and sustainable transportation.
  • Hands-on Learning: Get experience with real-world benchmarking and simulation tools, contributing directly to industry-relevant projects.
  • Mentorship and Collaboration: Learn from experts in the automotive and materials fields and collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive impactful results.

Join our team to help shape the future of electric vehicles and their performance by unraveling the intricate connections between lightweighting strategies, vehicle parameters, and sustainable transportation solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Subsystem Weight Benchmarking: Gather weight and cost data for core automotive subsystems, including Body in White (BiW), chassis, suspension, battery modules, and more, across different vehicle types (EVs, hybrids, ICEs).
  • Mass Influence Coefficient Calculation: Calculate mass influence coefficients (MIC) for each subsystem, quantifying the impact of weight reduction on overall vehicle performance, such as range, fuel efficiency, and handling.
  • Cost Analysis for Resizing/Redesigning Subsystems: Work with engineering and materials teams to estimate costs associated with resizing or re-engineering subsystems as a result of lightweighting (e.g., reinforcing lighter components, material substitution).
  • Simulation of Cost-Influenced Lightweighting Scenarios: Utilize simulation tools, including NREL’s FastSIM and AVL CRUISE, to predict performance impacts and compare cost-benefit ratios of lightweighting scenarios across various driving conditions.
  • Reporting and Recommendations: Develop comprehensive reports, visualizations, and recommendations that detail optimal lightweighting strategies based on performance impact and resizing costs, aiding strategic decision-making in automotive lightweighting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in data analysis, statistical modeling, and visualization tools.
  • Familiarity with electric vehicle architecture, components, and performance metrics.
  • Proficiency in software tools such as Excel, Python, MATLAB, or similar for data analysis and modeling.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment in all regions of the globe.
  • Enthusiasm for lightweighting, sustainability, electric mobility, and automotive innovation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MSc. Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or Similar
