Responsibilities & Qualifications

Position Overview

The Joining and Additive Manufacturing team, located in Kennesaw, GA, is seeking an Engineer. This position will involve leading and performing both routine and complex design, prototyping, characterization and testing relevant to additive manufacturing processes and aluminum products. Additionally, this role may have ownership of some portion of a project or program of tests in the lab, or responsibility of pieces of equipment for analysis, testing, or processing of materials.

The Engineer may also support other teams of R&D Engineers and Scientists in Metallurgy, Forming, Surfaces/coating and Corrosion to solve challenging problems across all Novelis value streams (can, auto, aerospace, and specialties) and develop a deeper core knowledge.

Responsibilities:

  • Balance priorities across multiple projects or work streams to meet assigned project commitments and timelines
  • Plan, organize, complete and document results of experiments, plant trials and product performance investigations conducted for Novelis, customers, and suppliers; responsible for reliability and accuracy of data and preliminary analysis of results
  • Perform routine and non-routine tasks and may coordinate the efforts of others to achieve common goals
  • Propose, justify and lead projects for a site or segments of larger projects
  • Develop and refine testing methodologies to assess the mechanical properties, microstructure, and performance of additively manufactured components.
  • Manage and maintain innovative equipment, proposing enhancements and finding opportunities for customized equipment upgrades and acquisition to expand capabilities of advanced manufacturing techniques.
  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams to integrate additive manufacturing technologies into broader product development and manufacturing processes.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on the integration of additive manufacturing into existing and new production workflows.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials/Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field with 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing or R&D environment focused on additive manufacturing or advanced materials processing.
  • Proven experience with additive manufacturing technologies, including powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, or binder jetting, particularly in automotive, aerospace, or other relevant industries.
  • Strong understanding of aluminum alloy systems and their application, including knowledge of material properties, microstructure, and performance in various scenarios such as automotive versus aerospace applications.
  • Familiarity with design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) principles, process optimization, and post-processing techniques. Experience with robotic controls and programming for additive manufacturing systems is a plus.
  • Experience with project management tools and principles, with a track record of successfully leading or contributing to complex technical projects.
  • Proficient in computational modeling, simulation, and data analysis, with experience using software tools commonly employed in additive manufacturing (e.g., CAD, CAM, FEM).
  • Hands-on experience with a variety of materials characterization techniques, such as metallography, microscopy, and mechanical testing, is advantageous.
