Responsibilities & Qualifications

Position Overview:

The EHS Specialist will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of safety/occupational health controls, policies, and procedures to achieve and maintain full compliance with regulatory, permit or license requirements in the specific areas of Occupational Health & Safety within their manufacturing unit.

The successful candidate must be able to work in a team-oriented organization and can manage multiple duties and projects simultaneously. This requires the individual to be adaptive, self-motivated, and able to work across all boundaries, which include all internal functional areas, as well as networking with EHS professionals within the North American Region.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Review all accidents and near misses and coordinate significant occupational accidents and illnesses thoroughly and punctually to assist in prevention of recurrences and ensure that documentation is accurate and complete.
  • Participate in and monitor safety observations/inspections in an effort to reduce accidents and avoid OSHA violations while establishing a behavior-based approach toward safety.
  • Develop and present effective safety meetings that are geared toward the manufacturing unit specific concerns. Ensure safety meetings are attended and that all department employees are trained in proper safety procedures.
  • Develop and ensure delivery of an effective safety orientation package to all new employees entering the manufacturing unit.
  • Actively support EHS policy, align decisions and actions with the EHS management system and integrate EHS performance in day-to-day operations.
  • Support, coach and participate with the Safety Committee.
  • Audit compliance of major EHS programs to legal and corporate requirements.
  • Identify needs based on compliance trends.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain procedures and documents required in the organization’s Business Management System.
  • Recognize, evaluate, and control employee exposures to industrial risks through the active facilitation of the sites Safety Programs and Policies.
  • Hold the responsibility of maintaining site safety and health programs, providing technical mentorship on the programs, and providing recommendations on implementation and improvements for the overall efficiency of those programs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences/Engineering/ Operations/Safety (or equivalent experience)
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills; ability to connect with all levels within the organization.
  • Meaningful experience with health and safety programs and associated regulations is required.
  • Possess skills to lead and develop other personnel to accomplish personal, plant and corporate objectives.
  • Must be flexible and able to operate in a fast-paced environment, with ability to balance multiple tasks and prioritize work.
  • Proficiency at software applications, including Microsoft Office, and quick learning of new technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to:

  • Interpret applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations.
  • Inspect and formally respond to governmental agencies.
  • Identify needs based on compliance trends.
  • Provide support for corrective actions in response to violations and deviations of permit conditions across all environmental media (air, storm water, wastewater, waste, spill prevention, SARA/EPCRA, etc.).
  • Promote compliance efforts, including Title V, MACT, RCRA, NPDES, Industrial User Programs, Spill Prevention, and TSCA CDR.
  • Maintain accreditation with standards such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI).
  • Carry out an internal audit program to meet the requirements of the applicable standards

Novelis’ Berea facility is located in Berea Kentucky near Lexington. With 150 employees the recycling facility processes approximately 20 percent of all aluminum cans recycled in the United States each year – more than 750 million pounds.
