Responsibilities & Qualifications

The EHS (Environmental, Health and Safety) Engineer will be a core team member at Novelis Kingston as they specialize in our top priority, safety, This Engineer will be a leader in safety by crafting innovative engineering solutions and ensuring the work we do is aligned with both federal, provincial legislation and Novelis Standard.

The EHS Engineer will design and implement equipment to improve safety in the facility. They will also have an eye for detail as they review, edit and audit key safety processes to validate safe work practices are being followed.

As an EHS Engineer, you will contribute to our company goals by:

  • Collaborating with Production, Maintenance and EHS department to assist them in maintaining a safe working environment in compliance with health and safety, environmental regulations, standards, and practices.
  • Leading all aspects of the MOC process for EHS regarding CAPEX and improvement projects.
  • Taking lead on Kingston works Machine Guarding initiatives, by designing and installing upgraded equipment to align with current safety standards.
  • Identifying and evaluate hazardous conditions including occupational health, safety, and environmental conditions and practices in the workplace through surveying.
  • Participating in various process safety evaluations/activities, such as: PSSR, PSEA, Quad Folder Risk assessment improvement, incident investigations, compliance reviews, risk studies, insurance surveys and conduct consequence analyses.
  • Reviewing engineering designs for compliance with company and industry safety standards.
  • Updating and review Lock out Tag Out procedures.
  • Conducting and coordinate on-site inspections to audit physical conditions to ensure safe work practices are being followed.
  • Performing work permit reviews, behavior-based safety inspections, job site safety compliance inspections, including hazard analyses and safe work procedures, and prepare written reports and recommendations.
  • Measuring and evaluate the hazard control system, policies, and procedures and recommend changes that reflect improved opportunities to eliminate workplace incidents and injuries.
  • Participating in root cause analysis following injury, property damage using statistical loss data to prepare comprehensive recommendations for corrective action to eliminate or minimize hazards.
  • Participating in developing and promoting on- or off-job safety informative programs, to address safety issues or concerns.
  • Acting as a mentor to other Kingston Works team members, ranging from other compliance engineers and management to shop floor employees
  • Participating in contractor prequalification evaluation activities and review contractor safety submittals for compliance to corporate requirements.
  • Evaluating new equipment installation in the plant to ensure it meets safety guidelines and standards set by province and Novelis.
  • Assisting with environmental, sustainability initiatives, as needed.
  • Supporting a 24/7 operation by responding to emergency situations and incidents, either during or after regular working hours, to provide technical assistance and advice.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in an Engineering field (mechanical, electrical, chemical, or metallurgical) required
  • Ontario Professional Engineer designation or in progress of acquiring designation preferred
  • 1-5 years of industrial experience an asset, including student roles
  • A proven understanding of continuous improvement methodologies
  • Experience using a variety of computer programs and willing to learn new computer programming quickly
  • Strong interpersonal skills to empower and engage a diverse team to achieve our Focused 5 by demonstrating our Cultural Beliefs in all undertakings
  • Comfortable using databases including but not limited to excel, Access, SQL or similar
  • The ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Strong communication skills to influence, coach and develop a diverse work group
  • Proven Project Management experience
