Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Mechanical Engineer – Facilities provides leadership, direction and support in the design, installation, and maintenance of mechanical systems within our plant. Using their extensive knowledge, this position helps to achieve the maintenance, reliability, and improvement objectives for the Kingston Works facility and cranes. They evaluate equipment, troubleshoot, and work to build efficiencies and best practices.

 

Under the leadership of the Associate EMRA Leader – Facilities, the incumbent will be responsible for identifying and problem-solving all mechanical facility-related issues. This position will support the development, installation and commissioning of capital expenditures. This Engineer will use strong analytical and critical thinking skills to recommend, and construct design changes for improvements on a vast array of equipment.

 

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Being a role model within the Kingston team by consistently demonstrating safe acts and following Novelis policies and procedures
  • Ensuring all equipment recommended, repaired, or modified meets all company and government safety regulations to ensure wellbeing of employees.
  • Applying engineering expertise to facilities systems (fire prevention systems, HVAC, building envelope, water, sewer, gas, cooling water systems, steam, doors, docks, pump house, tank farm/waste)
  • Conducting regular inspections of facilities to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with local and federal regulations.
  • Supporting production needs through cranes maintenance in tight, frequently revised schedules and/or equipment failures
  • Building respectful and collaborative relationships with tradespeople, peers and leadership
  • Continuing grow knowledge of engineering and maintenance principals and practice, share new developments and knowledge with team
  • Applying principles of continuous improvement methodology on a routine basis to understand root causes and craft effective corrective actions
  • Advocating for short- and long-term Capital Projects to align with the business plan by preparing and presenting requests, including sound financial analysis/justification, for management approval
  • Comparing alternatives and ensure safety, quality, cost, reliability and environmental improvements are all considered
  • Providing technical support to a team of unionized tradespeople and operators to trouble shoot, address preventive maintenance and engineering problems
  • Leading various projects, completing them on time, within budget and
  • Working with external resources to facilitate contractor management, build vendor relations and connect with engineering firms
  • Developing SOPs and training programs on processes and equipment for tradespeople and operators
  • Being available as needed to support operations at a 24/7 facility

The successful applicant will have:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university. Preferred P.Eng designation or in process of obtaining designation
  • 5+ years of work experience in a field of mechanical engineering and facilities specific experience, considered an asset
  • Proficient in the fundamentals of reliability such that the position can help establish appropriate PM’s and PdM’s for process equipment
  • Ability to write specifications and facilitate bids from contractors and suppliers
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills; ability and willingness to connect with all levels in the organization
  • Proven excellent leadership skills through past experiences
  • Desire to take initiative and develop a pro-active relationship with team members through follow-up, understanding their needs and encouraging a collaborative relationship
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize responsibilities; to balance multiple tasks at once without sacrificing attention to detail
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform root-cause-analysis on equipment and process issues, related to the mechanical area
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary contractors during project execution.
  • Knowledge of, and experience, designing and making minor changes to drawings in Solid Works and AutoCAD.
  • Must be flexible and able to operate in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Strong digital literacy and experience with Microsoft Office 356, SAP, Solid Works, AutoCAD, Inventor, or other 3D modelling software.
