Responsibilities & Qualifications

Position Overview:

The Electron Optics candidate will lead the development of new Electron Optics capabilities as well as providing hands-on operation and support of instruments in the Electron Optics Lab, which include Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy EDXS and Wavelength Dispersive Xray Spectroscopy (WDS). Output created using these tools is encouraged to provide technical understanding and problem solving for various aspects of our materials and processes for our corporate research environment in support of diverse businesses in the aluminum industry. Additional knowledge of adjacent techniques such as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB) procedures, X-Ray and Atom Probe Tomography, as well as Ion Milling Preparation are highly desirable. The candidate should display strong technical leadership skills as they will be required to develop new methods, capabilities, and techniques, prioritize their work, interpret data, and present results while interacting as part of interdisciplinary teams to help solve material and process related problems. The candidate must be able to handle multiple priorities, work in a fast-paced environment with strong critical thinking skills and sound decision-making, write technical reports, and contribute to intellectual property. The candidate is responsible for operating safely in a laboratory, ensuring ISO compliance within their work, and completing necessary instrument maintenance.

Responsibilities:

  • Add to the capability of the laboratory by developing new characterization techniques or implementing emerging capabilities developed by others. Support justification for and development of capital projects for instrumentation.
  • Perform SEM analysis on a wide variety of material using Secondary and Back Scattered Electron imaging and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy and Wavelength dispersive spectroscopy.
  • STEM Imaging and EDXS analysis of electropolished thin foils FIB lift outs, and microtomed samples.
  • Perform advanced SEM analysis including low KV EDS, high resolution imaging using in-column detection systems, and large volume particle analysis and classification. Perform image processing as requested.
  • Produce FIB cross sections and lift-outs using the Dual Beam SEM and prepare TEM/STEM samples using electro-polishing and Ultramicrotomy.
  • Actively contribute to problem solving and engage in discussions to address characterization needs of Novelis projects.
  • Actively engages team members to negotiate schedules and/or resolve technical problems.
  • Ensure work and capability development is ISO compliant.
  • Provide training to new users as requested.
  • Working with project teams and customer and plant support, set vision and strategy to build frameworks for complex technical challenges for the company in the Electron Optics Laboratory.
  • Strengthen partnerships and establish joint research initiatives with premier research organizations, universities, labs, and institutes to deliver the roadmaps.
  • Empower staff to be self-directed and build the team to be widely recognized and sought after as the top authorities within Novelis and promote global recognition for the team.
  • Bring together cross-functional global teams for knowledge exchange and joint problem solving.

Qualifications:

  • Entry to this level typically requires 3+ years of hands-on experience and a PhD or MS in Chemistry, Physics, or Materials Science and Engineering
  • Strong theoretical knowledge in characterization of materials by various analytical techniques such as SEM, TEM, STEM, FIB, and EBSD.
  • Technical proficiency in applying sophisticated research instrumentation to address problems.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and data analysis skills.
  • Demonstrates the desire to work hands-on in collecting analytical data.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with running and leading an electron microscopy laboratory.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities across multiple projects or work streams with excellent time management skills.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the Key Performance Indicators for a work area or project and the link to the significance to the business.
  • Maintains awareness of the state of the art in Electron Optics techniques.
  • Ability to independently isolate a problem and draw upon knowledge and experience to design appropriate possible solutions.
  • Considers multiple aspects in problem solving (e.g., economics, operating, maintenance, technical) in area of expertise.
  • Self-motivated and interested in long-term technical growth in the characterization area.
