Position Overview

The Mechanical Technician is responsible for handling all aspects of the mechanical maintenance function, such as design, construction, and installation of equipment design/modifications. This positions will analyze, recommend and construct design changes and improvements for a vast array of mechanical equipment. Position includes all the following responsibilities and qualifications and is not limited to only those specifics listed.

• Diagnose, analyze, troubleshoot, remove, replace, repair, and perform mechanical and electrical preventive maintenance, lubrication, repair, and adjustment of equipment.
• Perform mechanical repairs on industrial drive trains including gear boxes, gear trains, sprockets, chains, belts, pulleys; replace bearings.

• Determine appropriate equipment and set up components for welding according to project specifications.
• Repair or modify components by welding or using a cutting torch.

• Recognize and perform machine adjustments to the various manufacturing machine systems, operational interlocks, sensors, and energy systems isolations.
• Maintain certifications for calibrated equipment, maintenance documentation, machine history, and all other appropriate documentation for production equipment.
• Offer technical and mechanical suggestions to improve efficiency, reliability, and extended life of equipment.
• Continuously work with other departments to evaluate and improve technical solutions and strategies.
• Document and communicate maintenance and repair actions as well as irregularities.
• Test equipment to confirm machines will meet production and quality standards.
• Ensure compliance with safety, cleanliness, and established regulations.
• Guide production staff in routine preventive maintenance techniques.
• Maintain, monitor, and control spare parts and tooling.
• Comply with all safety procedures such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry permit procedure, etc. and utilize all personal protective and other safety equipment such as fall protection devices. Must replace all safety guards and restore housekeeping following repairs.
• Flexibility in shift schedule/coverage
• Use Maintenance software to complete maintenance work, plan and research projects and tasks, and locate inventory.
• Coordinate functions with operations to reduce unplanned downtime.
• Perform LOTO.
• Operate mobile equipment including forklift, manlift, crane, and other large pieces of equipment and machinery.

 


Qualifications

 

• Minimum of two to five years of mechanical and/or maintenance experience.
• Experience working with large pieces of mobile equipment and machinery.
• Experience working in the metals or industrial industry preferred.

• Experience welding and using a cutting torch.

• Must be flexible and able to operate in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
• Ability to work from drawings and sketches. Demonstrated comprehension of engineering specifications and technical manuals.
• Knowledge and hands on experience in hydraulics.
• Knowledge of bearing installation, lubrication, alignment, and failure causes.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate with all levels in the organization.
• Ability to organize and prioritize responsibility; must be able to manage multiple tasks at once without sacrificing attention to detail.
• Desire to take initiative and develop a pro-active relationship with employees through follow-up, understanding their needs and fostering a collaborative relationship.
• Must possess leadership skills to direct, lead, and develop other personnel to accomplish personal, plant and corporate objectives.
• Solid computer skills with software applications proficiency, including Microsoft Office and SAP preferred.
• Must be a team-player and self-starter.
• Willingness to train and improve knowledge and skills.

 

This is a list of physical requirements, related to a person’s ability to handle certain physical, mental, emotional demands:

• Work around molten metal
• Climb on/off fork truck several times a day
• Climb stairs occasionally
• Lift up to 50 lbs
• Be able to work at temperatures <50 degrees in the winter to >100 degrees in the summer
Experience with furnaces/molten metal and/or casting operations will be considered an advantage.
