The Novelis R&D Product & Process Technology Team is seeking a Materials Engineer – Corrosion. The person in this role will report to the Corrosion Cluster Lead and will be a key member of the Corrosion Cluster at the Novelis Global Research and Technology Center (NGRTC). The engineer will work closely with R&D scientists and engineers to complete projects focused on developing new and improved flat-rolled aluminum products with enhanced combinations of performance, processing efficiency, and recyclability for automotive, beverage packaging, and specialties applications. The engineer will be involved in core corrosion knowledge, proficiency, and capability development with responsibilities of owning project work packages and performing laboratory characterization and tests relevant to aluminum products and processes. This position will have the chance to lead projects, engage with associates in the plants and regional research centers, disseminate technical findings at leading industry conferences and peer-reviewed journal.

 

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with project teams to define, coordinate, and complete work packages, submit task requests to laboratories, conduct sample preparation, data analysis and interpretation, and summarize and report out results
  • Balance priorities between multiple projects or task/service requests to meet assigned project commitments, timelines and deliverables
  • Plan, coordinate, complete and document results of experiments, plant trials and product performance investigations conducted for Novelis, customers and suppliers while ensuring steps are taken to maintain reliability and accuracy of data
  • May work individually or as a part of a team to perform routine and non-routine tasks and may coordinate the efforts of others to achieve common goals
  • Assist with developing corrosion test methods and electrochemical test protocols to demonstrate product performance
  • Assess the capabilities of equipment and use equipment in a safe operating manner in compliance with Novelis safety standards
  • Build intellectual property for new products, processes, and techniques to differentiate Novelis from competition
  • Abide by Novelis’ Safety Absolutes, Cultural Beliefs, and Quality Management System

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering with 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in a R&D environment
  • Experience in a broad range of metallographic, electron optical, surface analytical and electrochemical techniques
  • Must be a strong teammate with ability to effectively work with different functions and levels across the organization
  • Proficient with computers and applications to collect, store, and analyze data and images
  • Solid understanding of one or more metallurgical processes such as casting, hot rolling, cold rolling, annealing, laboratory heat treatments, materials characterization techniques, etc. is highly preferred
  • Experience with project management including tools and principles is a plus
  • Specific experience related to aluminum products would be a distinct advantage
