We are currently seeking a Beverage Packaging Customer Solution Center (CSC) Pilot Line Team Leader to join our team at Novelis’ Global Research and Technology Center (NGRTC) in Kennesaw, Georgia. The incumbent will be a part of the Beverage Packaging Customer Solution Center, working in collaboration with engineers and scientists to develop process and product solutions for Novelis and its aluminum beverage packaging customers.

 

The Team Leader will support the day-to-day running of a dedicated team in their department. In addition to supervising the team, the Team Leader will lead projects to develop new capabilities for the can and end making pilot lines as well as projects in collaboration with customers and other partners in the supply chain to co-develop and support adoption of solutions for beverage can and end products and manufacturing, leading and supporting the development and implementation of new can designs and new packaging options for the beverage industry. The Engineer/Technologist Team Leader owns and drives all aspects of ongoing improvement by having oversight of training, instruments/equipment, ISO 17025 quality standard compliance, and leading the pilot line team to ensure the line's safe and efficient operation.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Drive improvements of the CSC’s capabilities by improving existing equipment and methods, or making recommendations on the introduction of new ones.
  • Propose new equipment additions and justifications for annual capital investment. Oversee upgrades, purchase, and commissioning of equipment on time and within the planned budget.
  • Responsible for design and development of experimental rigs, tooling, and processes that will be used to develop new products.
  • Lead and develop a team of 5-6 technologists and technicians.
  • Coordinate all aspects of team management, including annual performance review, talent review and succession planning.
  • Identify and support growth opportunities for direct reports to ensure continuous development.
  • Ensure standard operating procedures and quality system protocols are current, maintained, and applied with an emphasis on good pilot line and laboratory practices, i.e., implementation and maintenance of housekeeping programs, ISO 17025 compliance, and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) compliance.
  • Ensure all users/visitors are aligned with all Safety Absolutes and other EHS initiatives.
  • Participate in safety walk-throughs and ensure any highlighted issues and improvement opportunities are addressed in a timely way.
  • Ensure all staff are properly trained in standard operating procedures, quality system protocols, and equipment-specific requirements.
  • Assist in formulating and implementing the short and long-range goals for the operation of the Beverage Packaging CSC.
  • Supervise deployment of the team’s resources, identifying constraints and working with team and other leaders to implement effective cross-training plans to mitigate them.

Qualifications, Experience and Attributes

  • Entry to this level typically requires 7 years of dynamic experience and a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD software and tool design.
  • Project Management skills and experience.
  • Development and execution of capital project plans, schedules, and budgets, ensuring technical excellence and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, planning, organizing, time management, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to balance priorities across multiple projects or work streams.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the critical metrics for a work area or project and the link to the significance to the business. Growing knowledge of other relevant subject areas beyond own specialism.
  • Maintain awareness of the latest technologies relevant to the pilot line operations.
  • Ability to independently isolate a problem and draw upon knowledge and experience to craft appropriate possible solutions.
  • Consider multiple aspects of problem-solving (e.g. economics, operating, maintenance, technical) in the area of responsibility.

Preferred Experience

  • A good understanding of maintenance procedures and principles of equipment reliability.
  • Experience in leading a multi-functional team.
  • Knowledge of beverage container and aluminum industry products, materials, tooling, processes, manufacturing, and support equipment.
