Position Overview

The Novelis MMP Spokane team is seeking an Engineer. The person in this role will report to the Quality and Lab Leader. The ideal candidate will be responsible for plant material quality and testing, molten metal improvement projects, sustainability-focused projects, and maintenance of metallurgical and wet chemistry laboratories. This position will contribute to quality and process improvement, safety, and operational excellence. 

Responsibilities & Qualifications


  • Train with Operations team to become an expert on molten metal processing and DC casting 
  • Lead quality and process improvement projects 
  • Become the global expert on alumina and/or other metal cleanliness processes 
  • Improve in-house laboratory processes and update SOPs to reflect changes 
  • Work with Procurement and Process leaders globally to update purchase specifications 
  • Run laboratory equipment such as Optical microscope, SEM, TGA, DSC, XRD, ICP-OES, etc. 
  • Track project milestones, budget, and update stakeholders regularly 
  • Adhere to company safety absolutes 


Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical, Materials Science, or Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent 
  • 0 – 5 years of experience 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools 
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety and familiarity with balances, glassware, and hazardous chemicals 
  • Ability to initiate, perform, and complete reports in timely manner 
  • Ability to work independently with little direction in a fast paced environment 


Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Hands-on experience in an industrial setting and/or laboratory 
  • High mechanical aptitude  
  • Proficient in Analytical Chemistry practices

Novelis’ Spokane facility also known as the Molten Metal Processing Group (MMP) is located along the eastern border of Washington and Idaho. Employing approximately 40 people the facility focuses on innovating new products and processes to support Novelis’ manufacturing facilities along with the Novelis Global Research and Technology Center located in Kennesaw Georgia.
