Automation Engineer

It will strive to be net carbon neutral for Scope 1 and 2, be powered primarily by renewable energy, use recycled water and be a zero-waste facility.

The Novelis Bay Minette, AL team is seeking a Level 2 Automation Engineer. The person in this role will ensure a Level 2 System supports business needs translating operations shop floor data to upper levels (MESs) and other Level 2’s in information to routine management and improvements. This role will also coordinate data sets at the plant level and its sync with the global efforts is essential to improve the entire understand and use common solutions to reduce the overall complexity and implementation costs.

Responsibilities:

• Ensure that projects involving L2 development and modifications align with all Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) rules, regulations, and practices. Prioritize safety of self and fellow employees, actively find opportunities for improvements, and mentor junior staff.
• Partner with site, regional and global teams to ensure mechanisms, networks, or relationships are in place to collect project requirements and feedback; translates requirements and feedback to project team actions.
• Possess high level knowledge of site Utilities, Recycling and Remelt, Rolling to Finishing processes/applications, with a comprehensive understanding of the manufacturing areas and their interdependencies.
• Assess viability of a technologies, processes, or methods to make recommendations as to the best application for broadly implemented solutions
• Efficiently present technical information to peers or business leaders and influence site and regional technical decisions.
• Generate and contribute on complex technical problems where use of experience and creativity are essential to selecting technical directions
• Show active involvement in site, regional, or global projects including training and support of other departments or locations
• Support the introduction of Industry 4.0 within the molten metal and rolling manufacturing environment.
• Act as liaison between Shop Floor, MES and Global Information Technology groups.

Minimum Qualifications:

• BS in Computer Science or Engineering or a four (4) year degree in a related technical field (STEM)
• 7 years of progressive experience in programming languages, databases and interface systems. Excellent communication (oral and written) skills; ability to connect with all levels in the organization
• Desire to take initiative and develop a pro-active relationship with employees through follow-up, understanding their needs and encouraging a collaborative relationship

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of Historians (preferably iba and/or OSISoft-PI)
• Experience in Metals Rolling/Fabrication Industry
• Knowledge of MES systems.
